The summer inferno beat down on Fred like a punishment from God. The desert was a 140-degree asylum, burning a hole like a laser beam through Fred’s Kevlar helmet into his brain. The sun burned through his heavy body armor, through his desert brown camouflage uniform and brown T-shirt. The inferno stole away his water as soon as he drank it. Fred never pissed, just sweated out all his fluids. If he didn’t keep drinking, he’d catch on fire himself like the lost flag burning on his shoulder—a patch representing a dream that never existed in reality. This was a “dream” the rich and powerful manipulated to create an ever-growing nightmare for the poor and desperate.

Fred saw a shadow fall across the sand, the city, the crowd of civilians, and his convoy. The darkness looked like the shadow of a giant eagle. The sergeant shielded his eyes and glanced at the sky. Legions of Drones flew overhead, over everything. But they weren’t the drones the CIA was using in Afghanistan and Pakistan. These drones weren’t the Archangel Gideon, flown down from Heaven to “save” humankind. These Drones were far more advanced, as if they had traveled from the future back through time. These Legions were Lucifer’s angels, the winged daemons of “perfect” precision and “perfect logic.” These daemons flew themselves and executed human beings via logarithms. The Drones saw everything, like thieving gods. They executed you not when you picked up a rifle, but when you said something “wrong” on social media. They robbed a man of his right to be killed by another man. The Drones had come from Hell to cast their shadow across the face of the Earth, to enslave humankind in the name of “peace” and “security.”
