I love when longtime friends are back in West Virginia for a visit.
Tamara & I met almost 10 years ago (2005) & hit it off right away, with our interest in poetry, the spoken word, literature & more. After supporting each other in several open mic type events, we joined forces with friends Casie Fox & Charlotte Firestone in 2008 to co-found Morgantown Poets here in Morgantown, West Virginia. Our goal was to do a regular monthly event for poetry, spoken word & literary arts that was free and open to the public.
The group is still going strong today, thanks to the work of organizer/host Scott Emerson and poets Daniel McTaggart, Rayna Momen and others (as always with a huge thanks to Ro Brooks & Daniel Gibbons of the Monongalia Arts Center, MAC, 107 High Street).
It's wonderful that for the first time a Morgantown Poet co-founder will be headlining the event as a featured author. She'll be sharing poetry and spoken word from her new book, "The Shaping of an 'Angry' Black Woman," (listen to Tamara talk about the book in the video below). The event is today (June 19) at 7 p.m. at the MAC. Friends, readers & listeners in the Morgantown area, or just passing through are welcome to join us.
Tamara, who now makes her home in Hawaii, has also established an amazing literary blog, PenPaperPad.com. Be sure you bookmark PenPaperPad.com. Tamara has guest authors, writers' tips, her own amazing writing (check out her new dystopian fantasy fiction; it's very cool...) and much more. Tamara's also doing fun, innovative work with video blogging poetry, literary news and more on YouTube.
Here's a short video of Tamara and I discussing poetry, her new book, dystopian fiction, Morgantown Poets (tips for organizing literary groups), the event tonight & more... Congrats to Tui Snider on winning a copy of "The Shaping of an 'Angry' Black Woman" during the recent promo-giveaway Tamara did here on theodorewebb.com. Thanks to all who participated by commenting on the earlier post.
