Looking forward to serving on a literary panel this Saturday (Oct. 12) along with authors Michelle Yost and Nina Forsythe.

The "Community Reading/Writing Groups" panel is 4 p.m.-4:45 p.m. at The Frostburg State University Center for Creative Writing, 22 E. Main St., Frostburg, Maryland.

Feel free to join us!

The panel is one part of numerous exciting writing activities happening in Frostburg this weekend at the Western Maryland Independent Literature ("Indie Lit") Festival Oct. 11-12, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Activities are taking place on Main Street in downtown Frostburg.

The event brings together readers, editors, and publishers with writers and educators of the local community. The Facebook event page says, "The festival is absolutely free for presses, panelists, and participants and is open to the public. Panel discussions and roundtable sessions include topics on various creative genres, DIY publishing, self-publishing, promotion and marketing, writing local, and reading and writing online."

Sponsors include the Center for Creative Writing and the Allegany County Library System.

What will I be sharing during the "Community Reading/Writing Groups" panel? Great question!

I'll have a 5-8 minute presentation on my experiences with community writing groups, PLUS, I'll be answering any questions you might have about how to organize and/or promote a literary group in your community.

I'll likely be sharing my experiences with poetry open mics in Eugene, Oregon and Fayetteville, North Carolina.

I'll particularly be speaking about the work we've done over the past several years in Morgantown to build a thriving poetry and literary scene within the community (huge thanks to the other Morgantown Poets co-founders Tamara Woods of penpaperpad.com, Casie Fox and Charlotte Firestone of SpiralSpark.com, as well as the author who has organized Morgantown Poets over the past several years, Scott Emerson.)

Moreover, I'm involved in a local play writing group led by Donald C. Fidler, author of "Boogieban," to be performed Nov. 11 in honor of Veteran's Day at M.T. Pockets Theatre Company. (Note: The playwrights group works with M.T. Pockets on a New Works Festival each year.)

I'm also involved in the Morgantown Writers Group (critique group) facilitated by George Lies and Patricia Patteson. MWG meets at Morgantown Public Library to workshop short stories, novel chapters and more.

Through experiences with various groups over the years, I can answer, in general, questions about best practices in a workshop group setting and tips to facilitate a literary group.

Above all, I'm looking forward to meeting folks who are attending the panel and to learning some new ideas from my co-panelists, Michelle Yost and Nina Forsythe. Michelle has done an amazing job in her key role organizing this large festival, and my hat's off to her. I've never organized any literary gathering as large as Michelle's involvement/organizing with this festival, so I'm very interested in hearing Michelle's take on everything.

I haven't had the privilege yet of meeting Nina Forsythe, but I'm very interested to hear what this talented poet has to say. Here's a bit of information about Nina from the festival literature:

"Nina Forsythe has an MFA from Bennington and has poems, translations, and reviews in a variety of magazines, including Nimrod, Puerto del Sol, Review Revue, and the anthology Knocking on the Door. She is a three-time winner of the Backbone Mountain Review Poetry Prize."

I hope you'll join us for this exciting panel. Again, the panel is free and open to the public. If you're planning to attend, feel free to get in touch with me if you have any specific questions or anything you would like me to cover. You can get in touch via the comments below, through my Facebook author page,

NOTE: For my readers who might be attending the panel or festival, I'll be carrying the very first edition print hard-copy version of "Lifeline," the first in my dystopian fiction "STARLING Series." The books tell the story of 15-year-old Simon Laramie and his friends who are fighting for their freedom of speech and privacy in 2045 "America." Be sure to see me to get a signed copy.

Feel free to share this post!

See you Saturday!
